As the child of a clarinetist, and a brilliant mechanical engineer, music became an immediate part of my life. My first of many instruments was the clarinet, and my passion for music never ceased to grow. There was never a time in my life where this passion dimmed.
As a youth, I casually attended church with my family, but in a denomination that was more about tradition than relationship. After a childhood in the northeastern United States, I joined the Navy during the Viet Nam years. Returning from the service, I attended a music conservatory where I received an Associates Degree in performance and composition. I was fortunate to tour extensively across the country (as a drummer) with several rock and roll bands during the late sixties and seventies. All the while, my musical talents increased as I acquired the ability to play more and more instruments. As my journey progressed, I further distanced myself from the Truth, and found logic and “personal power” in New Age teaching.
About fifteen years ago, I began a period of soul searching over the life I was intended to live. God, as I knew Him then, gave me a “vision” of myself as a solo musician. But what voice would this music have? And the answer was….the Native American flute. Almost without effort, I developed my skill with this instrument. It’s earthy resonance was like a sound I had been searching for my entire life. Utilizing skills I had learned in earlier years, I began crafting my own flutes. From traditional single chamber Native flutes, to the harmonizing four-chamber flutes. I hand craft every instrument I utilize in my performance and on my recordings.
Over these past fifteen years, I have written and produced over a dozen CDs. I am blessed to have built a professional recording studio in my home where all my music is recorded. I have never stopped performing, and make my living as a musician, supplementing my income with the sale of my custom-made flutes.
Sunny Heartley says of Native American “ Inspired" Flute Making..."I do not remember not making Flutes. It is definitely GOD's Gift to me, though it has only been fourteen summers now that I have been crafting them, or have they been crafting me? I have learned quite a bit about flutes, myself, and the world during this process of Flute making. Each Flute that I build, teaches me something new, as do the people who purchase them from me, and my fellow Flute makers, as well, teach me for I have learned to listen...listen to the notes, listen to the words, and to listen to the Creator. For within and without is where the journey begins and ends, and my journey as a flute maker has a new beginning each day I get to hand-craft a flute for someone special. May this journey continue for many more summers,as it brings me such joy to share the music the Flutes make and the Healing that takes place from the playing of my Native American "inspired" Flutes. To The Creator... I am eternally grateful for my gift and will continue to bring each Flute I craft to life with the spirit of Healing, Joy ,and Love.To add some more info; These Flutes are seen as extremely effective Sound Healing Tools because of their bright voices and accurate tunings... May Blessings flow into each of you everyday…

Native American Flutes or Native American Style Flutes or Native American Inspired Flutes?
Next to the drum, the most important Native American instrument was the flute. Ironically, because Native American flute construction was significantly different than the construction of African, Asian or European flutes, it is now next to impossible to find a flute that was carved by an actual American Indian person. The reason for this is "Native American flute" is now the accurate musical term for a wooden duct flute with a block whistle mechanism, so any such flutes, even if they were made in Korea, can technically be sold as Native American flutes-- just like Spanish guitars that were made in Cleveland Ohio are still called "Spanish guitars." You have to look for the "made in Spain" label to find a guitar that is authentically from Spain, and you have to find an unambiguous statement that a flute carver is a Native American artist to find a flute that is authentically Native American. (The IACA seal on the seller's website is an effective guarantee that you're buying a Native American flute from Native America, rather than a flute in the same style from someplace else.) Unfortunately, truly Native American flute carvers are few and far between. Most flutes in this style are made by white or Asian people. Unlike other artists, they are not legally barred from marketing their work as "Native American flute carving" even though they are non-native, so they have effectively taken over the market. Flute carving is a very good example of exactly why the Indian Arts and Crafts Act is so important--if not for this law, all Native American arts and crafts would be going this route, and you wouldn't be able to find authentic Indian art anywhere off-reservation.
Recently I have encountered a bit of a problem on EBAY regarding their interpretation of this Law or ACT. Because we were not Native Americans a bunch of flute makers have temporarily lost their venue to sell Native American Flutes on EBAY. We are countering with and by listing our flutes as”American Flutes” or “Native Style Flutes”. I personally have been selling my Sun Heart Flutes on EBAY for Over 4 years and was simply appalled at having a listing terminated with not so much as a”by your leave”!And still as of February 21,2009 Nothing except a cookie cutter response to my many emails asking why. I will still be listing on EBAY as it is a good place to sell my products. I also know that I have some native american blood in me but not enough to matter, but with that said the instrument is known as a Native American Flute as stated above and we as craftsman, with high regard for the Native Cultures in North America, will continue to bring high quality instruments to the population, and thus raising the awareness of Native Americans everywhere.
